If you're thinking, "What the heck does that word even mean?", you're not alone.
The Greek/Latin root ped- refers to the foot. Orth- comes from the Greek word orthos, meaning straight or upright. The suffix -ics denotes a body of knowledge or skill. Add them all up and you get the field of pedorthics!
What does a pedorthist do?
According to the Pedorthic Footcare Association, "a credentialed Pedorthist is a specialist in using footwear – to include shoes, shoe modifications, foot orthoses, and other pedorthic devices – to solve problems in, or related to, the foot and lower limb."
A pedorthist is a good person to see if you need to be properly fit for a pair of shoes, want your shoes to function better or feel more comfortable, want your gait analyzed, and much more.
Pedorthist or podiatrist?
If you have an active wound or a serious injury, it's best to see a podiatrist first. Podiatrists and pedorthists often work closely together and refer patients to each other, depending on what each patient needs.
