Custom Molded Orthotics
Why Our Orthotics Are Different
At Comfort Footworks, our board-certified pedorthist Paul Henderson evaluates your foot, makes the mold, fabricates the orthotic, and ensures a custom fit — all completely in-house at our Matthews, NC shop. No outside labs necessary.
Custom made orthotics are medical devices that give more natural support under your foot, with precision for exactly what each foot needs. Paul creates plaster molds of your feet, then crafts the orthotics from thermoplastic materials that are both comfortable and durable. This customized support corrects alignment in the body to help every step stay pain free.
Three Ways to Get the Right Support
1. Custom Molded Orthotics (Made In-House by Paul)
Our most personalized option. Paul Henderson is an ABCOP Board Certified Pedorthist with over 35 years of experience and second-generation expertise in footwear fitting, orthotics fabrication, and shoe modifications. He creates a physical (positive) plaster mold of each foot — which you keep, making future adjustments simple — and fabricates your orthotics right here in Matthews.
2. Scanned Custom Insoles (Aetrex & Amfit)
Our most cost-effective custom insole uses Aetrex technology — the most sophisticated in-store foot scanning experience available. We capture a digital image of each foot to create a 3D-printed insole tailored to its needs. The scan takes less than 5 minutes, provides valuable diagnostic information, and is free of charge with no obligation to purchase. If you order, your custom insoles are ready for pickup in just a few days. For more specialized modifications, our Amfit scanning system digitally maps your foot so our staff can make advanced adjustments for complex needs. Either way, we schedule a follow-up fitting to check them professionally.
3. Over-the-Counter Orthotics
Many feet do great with a well-matched OTC insole from names like Aetrex and PowerStep — shop our orthotics online or come in for a fitting. Our custom insoles are priced significantly less than those obtained elsewhere, so check out the competition, then check us out.
Free Foot Evaluations
Suffering from foot, knee, hip, or back pain? Ongoing discomfort is often a body alignment issue that starts at your feet. Like driving a car out of alignment, poorly aligned feet cause unnecessary wear on everything above them. A free foot evaluation identifies these issues — no appointment drama, no obligation. Custom orthotics can help relieve low, medium, and high arches, heel pain, neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, bunions, and many other common foot conditions.
The short answers
Do I need custom orthotics? Often not. A well-matched over-the-counter orthotic in the $60 to $100 range solves the problem for a large share of the feet we see. Custom earns its price for pronounced structural problems, a meaningful leg length difference, diabetic complications, or when two or three well-chosen OTC insoles have not helped.
How are yours made? Paul Henderson, a board-certified pedorthist, evaluates your foot, takes a plaster mold, and fabricates the orthotic from thermoplastic in our Matthews shop. You keep the molds, which makes later adjustments simple. Nothing is sent to an outside lab.
What about the scanned insoles? The Aetrex scan takes under five minutes, is free with no obligation, and produces a 3D-printed insole shaped to your foot, usually ready in a few days. It is the most cost-effective custom option we offer.
What does it cost? Prices depend on which option your foot needs, so we quote after the evaluation. The evaluation itself is free, and everything here is HSA and FSA eligible.
Do I need a referral? No. Local doctors refer patients to us, but you can book an appointment or just call on your own. If you have diabetes, neuropathy or pain you have never had evaluated, see a podiatrist first; a custom device should follow a diagnosis.
What if they don't feel right? Call us. We schedule a follow-up fitting and adjust the device; that is one reason the molds stay with you.
