That soreness usually comes from too much pressure landing on a small area with every step. The first thing I reach for is an orthotic with a metatarsal pad, a small raised dome just behind the ball of the foot that helps spread the load, and then a shoe with a thick, cushioned sole that rolls you forward so the front of the foot does not have to bend as far. Start with one of the Aetrex orthotics with metatarsal support, then pair it with an Orthofeet sneaker, or wear OOFOS around the house instead of going barefoot.
